About
Wassily Kandinsky, born on December 16, 1866, was a highly influential Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited as one of the pioneers of abstract art. His work, characterized by vibrant colors, geometric forms, and a spiritual dimension, revolutionized the art world and continues to inspire artists today. Kandinsky's contributions extend beyond painting; his writings on art theory, particularly "Concerning the Spiritual in Art," remain essential reading for understanding the development of modern art.
Before Fame
Before dedicating himself to art, Kandinsky pursued studies in law and economics at the University of Moscow. His early travels around the Vologda region of Russia profoundly impacted his artistic sensibilities, exposing him to the rich colors and patterns of folk art. Despite a successful academic career, Kandinsky's encounter with Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings, particularly "Haystacks," ignited a passion for art that led him to begin formal painting studies at the age of 30. He focused on life-drawing, sketching, and anatomy to hone his skills.
Career Highlights
Kandinsky's career is marked by distinct periods of artistic development. He co-founded the influential artist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in 1911, which promoted abstract expressionism. This period, known as the Blue Rider Period, lasted until 1914 and produced some of his most iconic works. His notable paintings include "On White II" and "Composition X," demonstrating his mastery of geometric forms and abstract composition. Kandinsky taught at the Bauhaus school in Germany from 1922 until its closure in 1933. His later works continued to explore abstract forms and color theory, solidifying his legacy as a visionary artist.
